Rich Tatum  > Art > Finding My Marble
It all started with a little glass marble I saw rolling around somewhere in a drawer, I don't even remember where. I swiped it.

I could already see in my minds eye the experiements with light and context I wanted to try with it. And thus, this set., I haven't yet explored all the things I want to do, so, sad to say, there will be more marbles.

But, so far, I'm delighted with the stuff that's come up so far. I hope you like it, too.

Rich Tatum > The Highlight of My Night
The focus, this time, is on the starbust erupting from the glass and landing in inky surprise. I like how the marble gathers the light and focuses it, creating dark space where light would have shown, where it not interrupted by fused sand. The brightness of the starburst is fascinating.

I have a 3M PostIt note upon which I scribbled inky blackness with a Sharpie (I'm all about trade-names!). This little 3x3-inch square of night became the background for a couple experiments. I like it because it's dark, yet textured, and flat. And tiny.

I would never shoot these things if I didn't constantly challenge myself to turn mundane stuff into intersting pictures. I apologize for subjecting you to them. If you like it, though, I offer no such apologies. Just enjoy!

A return to marbles of yore.

You've seen this subject before, here in my photo stream. I keep revisiting it like a sore tooth. Some day I'll give you something dramatic and exciting and brilliant. But not yet.

Does it mean I'm simple for liking shiny things? Must be the kid in me. (I'm nearly 40.... :: sigh :: .)

Rich Tatum > A Drop of Light
Since I saw fit to shoot more pix of my marble, I threw a little attention toward my glass bead, as well. Same treatment, different outcome.

Rich Tatum > Canned Tornados
I have this glass egg with a swirl of bubbles in it, it's sort of a paperweight. I've taken a few shots of it before, but this one's my current favorite.

Rich Tatum > Globe Project (2 of 7): Illumi Nation
Shot this series with my 1-watt LED flashlight at night on the moonroof of my car.

(Update: I modified this photo heavily to arrive at a lighter bluish globe here, which I dropped into a draft layout here, for a church business report. Tell me what you think!)
------------------------------------------------------------

I'm working on a design for an up-coming financial report for my church. Traditionally, this report features a world-missions theme in the design. So, while standing on our worship pastor's office, I spied this little crystal globe on her desk. So, I stole it. You'll probably see a few more treatments of this - hope you don't get bored!

Rich Tatum > Third Rock From the Sun - In Blue
This photo was crafted out of this photo with extensive PhotoShopping (er — Paintshop Pro-ing). I needed it to design the Annual Report I'm working on. Hope you like it!

I chose one of my less-favorite of the globe photos for this composition because it was straightforward and simple. Though I would've preferred to have maybe Africa in view. I wasn't thinking when I shot it.

Oh well...

Your comments are welcome!

Rich Tatum > Globe Project (3 of 7): The World at My Fintertips
Shot this one at night. I'm holding the 1-watt LED flashlight in the same hand just below the globe.

Rich Tatum > Globe Project (4 of 7): I've Got the Whole World in My Hand
Used my 1-watt LED light on this one, as well. The light's in the same hand, I'm shooting with the other. Striking!

Actually, the pose I had to hold to get this shot was probably striking, as well! I didn't want the spotlights and street lamps around my house to show up in the shot, so I am actually holding the globe about a foot or so above my head, and trying to get a good angle, a good composition, a good highlight and to not drop either the glass globe or the LED flashlight were challenging.

I'm sure if anybody saw me, I would've looked quite silly.

But the shot speaks for itself. It's worth it!
